BLACK HISTORY MONTH ’23 AT INSOMNIAC GAMES

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate and pay tribute to the legacy of Black people and Black culture around the world – as well as to honor the culture of the present and future. In today’s blog, we want to share with you how Insomniac Games is celebrating the occasion internally!

So, how is Insomniac recognizing Black History Month?

This year, we’re celebrating with a ‘90s theme, selected on by Black devs at the studio, to highlight an era of impactful Black representation in media. Our theme is complete with some special designs created by Insomniacs Jordyn Holland (Senior Dev Support Analyst) and Natasha Lee Hooker (Senior Development Support Analyst), which will be featured in an employee-exclusive goodie box made up of t-shirts, stickers, hats, and a cassette USB featuring interviews with Black Insomniacs discussing Black joy.

Our studio will also celebrate over weekly workshops spotlighting Black culture, a Black Harlem Renaissance Art Tour, and inviting Black guest speakers to speak with our team about where Black culture has been and where it’s going.

Lastly, Insomniac Games devs will take part in a Black History-focused talk show, internally hosted by Black devs ft. trivia games and art appreciation. In recent years, talk show trivia was centered around TV, movies, food, and music – there was even a live DJ battle once! It’s always a fun and lively time, and we’re eager to see what our hosts are cooking up this year!

Within our PlayStation family, we’re delighted to collaborate with Santa Monica Studio to launch a chapter of Black@PlayStation, which aims to celebrate Blackness, Artistic Expression; discuss the importance of Allyship; and connect our studio talent.

Later this month, we will introduce you to Insomniacs to talk about their favorite memories from the ‘90s and host an Insomniac Live with devs to talk about their love of games!
